Spain has one of smallest number of food-related deaths in world

SPAIN is among the countries with the least food-related deaths, a new scientific study has revealed.

Frequently praised for its ‘Mediterranean diet’, Spain finished third in the global list, just behind Israel and France.

Spain has 89.5 food-related deaths per 100,000, while Israel and France has 88.9 and 89.1 respectively.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded the research into 195 countries, which was published in the Lancet.

Deaths caused by eating badly, including heart attacks and obesity, total 11 million a year worldwide, which is more than tobacco-linked deaths, which account for 7 million.

It comes after it emerged in February that Spain is the world’s healthiest country, following analysis by Bloomberg.

The Bloomberg Healthiest Country index showed that the Spanish moved above the Italians to become the world’s most healthy nation.
